Education: Dr. Robert L. Collins earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Neuropsychology from the University of Houston in 2004. He completed his predoctoral internship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Department of Neuro-Oncology. He has been board certified in Clinical Neuropsychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) since 2009.
Employment: Dr. Collins is a partner at Neurocognitive Specialty Group and Clinic Director of the Houston (Missouri City) clinic. From 2006 to 2019 he served as a staff neuropsychologist at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, where he directed the Clinical Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Residency within the Neurology Care Line. He held an appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Baylor College of Medicine from 2009 to 2020.
Forensic Specialty Areas: Dr. Collins has served as an independent neuropsychological examiner since 2016 and is an experienced testifying expert in Defense Base Act (DBA) and Longshore matters, having testified before the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Administrative Law Judges and in state district courts. He has completed more than 1,000 complex medical file reviews and insurance-requested independent medical and neuropsychological examinations supporting disability determinations, treatment recommendations, and return-to-work decisions. He is retained by both plaintiff and defense counsel and approaches every case from an evidence-based perspective.
Research: Dr. Collins has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters on traumatic brain injury, epilepsy and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, performance and symptom validity testing, neurodegenerative disease, and the cognitive effects of cancer treatment. He co-authored the chapter on behavioral and psychiatric comorbidities of traumatic brain injury in Traumatic Brain Injury: A Clinician’s Guide to Diagnosis, Management, and Rehabilitation.
Leadership: Dr. Collins served as President of the Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology (APPCN) from 2019 to 2021, following eight years on its Board of Directors. He is a member of the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, the International Neuropsychological Society, and the Houston Neuropsychological Society.
Prior to his career in psychology, Dr. Collins served in the United States Army as a UH-1 helicopter pilot, reaching the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 2 and receiving the Air Medal in 1991.
