Frequently Asked Questions

A neuropsychological evaluation is a standardized assessment of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. It is administered by a trained psychometrist under the supervision of a board-certified neuropsychologist. The evaluation measures memory, attention, processing speed, language, executive functioning, and other cognitive domains to help diagnose conditions and guide treatment planning.

A typical neuropsychological evaluation takes 4 to 8 hours, depending on the referral question and case complexity. This includes a clinical interview, standardized testing, and sometimes additional questionnaires. A written report with results and recommendations is typically available within 2 to 4 weeks.

Many insurance plans cover neuropsychological evaluations when they are medically necessary and referred by a physician. Coverage varies by plan and carrier. Contact our billing department at (888) 606-0086 for insurance verification before your appointment.

A neuropsychologist specializes in understanding the relationship between brain function and behavior through cognitive testing. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats mental health conditions primarily through medication management. Neuropsychologists do not prescribe medication but provide detailed diagnostic assessments that inform treatment decisions by other providers.

An Independent Medical Examination is a neuropsychological evaluation conducted at the request of a third party — such as an insurance company, attorney, or employer. IMEs are used in workers’ compensation claims, personal injury litigation, disability determinations, and other medicolegal contexts. NSG neuropsychologists have conducted thousands of IMEs across multiple states.

Physicians, attorneys, and other referral sources can submit referrals by calling (888) 606-0086, faxing to (346) 223-0296, or emailing [email protected]. We accept referrals for clinical evaluations, forensic IMEs, fitness-for-duty assessments, and more.

Neuropsychological evaluations help diagnose and characterize conditions including ADHD, traumatic brain injury, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, learning disabilities, PTSD, depression, anxiety, and other neurological and psychiatric conditions.

ABPP-CN (American Board of Professional Psychology — Clinical Neuropsychology) is the highest credential a neuropsychologist can earn. It requires a doctoral degree, completion of an accredited internship and postdoctoral fellowship, peer review, and passing a rigorous examination. Multiple NSG neuropsychologists hold ABPP-CN certification.

Your evaluation will begin with a clinical interview where you discuss your medical history, symptoms, and concerns. You will then complete a series of standardized cognitive tests covering memory, attention, language, problem-solving, and other areas. The tests are not painful — they involve tasks like remembering word lists, solving puzzles, and answering questions. Bring your ID, insurance card, and any relevant medical records.

NSG operates clinics in Houston (League City), Dallas (Plano), Pensacola, New Orleans (Slidell), Jackson (Ridgeland), Atlanta (Alpharetta), and Miami. We also offer telehealth services across multiple states. Call (888) 606-0086 for the location nearest you. You can also visit our Locations page.
